"Harmonious Union" Coin Pendant

January 2011
Sterling silver

The four characters on this coin-shaped pendant, 百年好合 (bǎiniánhǎohé, read top-bottom-right-left), literally translate to "one hundred years of good unity," but the meaning goes deeper than that. In Chinese, "one hundred years" is used euphamistically to mean "a very long time." The whole phrase, poetically translated, means "enduring and harmonious union," generally referring to married felicity.
