‘Īlio holo i kau uaua, or the Hawaiian monk seal, is one of only two mammals endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Its name in Ōlelo means “dog that runs in rough water,” and they are considered by the kūpuna to be guardians of souls after death. Sighting a Hawaiian monk seal has always been considered a good omen, even more so now that the population is critically endangered. They can be playful in the water, as shown by the exuberance of this design.

The style of the optional popcorn chain echoes the look of traditional Hawaiian olonā fiber cordage, and the slightly satin finish of the leioglyph gives it a glow not unlike that of beach glass.
