Baguette Pattern Wedding Bands
April 2025
18 karat gold
I had previously designed an engagement ring for a truly lovely couple, and they came back to me to design their wedding bands. The engagement ring features six tapered baguette diamonds on the shoulders of the ring, and I wanted to make a reference to that as well as create something that would nest well with the original ring, and to have it be a design that was unisex enough that it would look good on the fingers of both the bride and groom.
I created a tessellating pattern of baguette shapes, alternating a mirror-polished flat section with a random-patterned high-textured section to create extra contrast between the shapes. The high-pattern sections create a diamond-like refraction of light, while the flat sections reflect light the same way that the table facets of a baguette do. Moreover, the chevron-shaped intaglio on the side of the ring perfectly hugs the engagement ring as it sits on the bride's finger. The geometric design is at once feminine when paired with the engagement ring, and extraordinarily masculine on the groom's finger.
Having gotten to know the couple, I also knew how deeply their relationship is rooted in their faith so I built some hidden messages into the ring. The pattern repeats seven times around the rings, which is a reference to the seven days of Creation. By their union, they are creating their very own world which they must protect and nurture. The yin/yang nature of the opposing textures even represent each night and day of the week, as it says in Genesis "there was evening and there was morning, the first day." Additionally, the Sabbath is the seventh day and is meant for rest, and the two of them should always be a source of peace and comfort for each other. Finally, because these rings were cast from what remained of the groom's grandmother's gold that we used to create the original engagement ring, all three rings were at one point a single pool of molten gold in a crucible. Three separate parts that are in fact one, like another important Triumvirate in their lives.
May they wear them in health!
