Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the brightest celestial body visible to the naked eye after the Sun and the Moon. Venus is unusual in that it rotates on its axis in the opposite direction of all the other planets in the system. Although it is the most similar planet to the Earth in terms of size, gravity, and composition, it has a much denser and toxic atmosphere and is far more volcanic. Observations of Venus were recorded as early as 1600 BCE by the Babylonians, but because of its brightness it is likely that it had been observed by by pre-literate cultures long before.
In Greco-Roman mythology, Venus (Greek name: Aphrodite), is the goddess of love. Astrologically, Venus represents the qualities of harmony, emotions (particularly affection), empathy, eros, and femininity. Venus is associated with Friday.
